HVAC Tips Every Homeowner Should Know
A comfortable home shouldn’t be complicated.
Here are a few simple ways to get the most out of your heating and cooling system — and know when it’s time to call the pros.
1. Change Your Air Filters Regularly
Dirty filters are the #1 cause of breakdowns, high energy bills, and weak airflow.
1″ filters: replace every 30 days
4–5″ filters: replace every 6 months
Homes with pets, construction, or allergies: change more often
2. Indoor Air Quality Matters
Your HVAC system circulates the air your family breathes. Signs IAQ could be improved:
Dust shortly after cleaning
Allergy symptoms indoors
Odors when system runs
Stuffy or “stale” rooms
3. Smart Thermostat Habits
Lowering the temp doesn’t cool faster. Raising it doesn’t heat faster. It just runs longer. The winning formula is simple: consistency = efficiency.
4. Don’t Skip Maintenance
Tune-ups prevent breakdowns and protect efficiency — and are required to keep system warranties valid. Best schedule: Spring (cooling tune-up) + Fall (heating tune-up)
5. Don’t Block Supply or Return Vents
It does the opposite. Closing vents increases static pressure and makes the system work harder, not less.
6. Give the Outdoor Unit Room to Breathe
The condenser needs airflow. If it’s buried in grass, leaves, or debris efficiency drops and overheating starts. If the unit is visibly dirty, it’s time for a coil cleaning.
7. Duct Cleaning Helps More Than One Realizes
Duct cleaning isn’t just for dust — it’s for airflow, efficiency, and air quality. If you notice:
Musty smells
Excess dust
Rooms with poor airflow
Recent construction or pets
8. When Repair Stops Being the Smart Choice
Here’s when replacement starts becoming the better investment:
Repairs are frequent and/or getting expensive
Comfort issues never seem to improve
Energy costs keep rising
The system is 10+ years old
